Meeting Tonight at Community Center

Tonight from 6pm to 7pm we will have a meeting for the NEN Garden at the NEN Community Center. Sara Stewart will show the Unity Gardens slide presentation and we will talk about what to plant. Tom Bull, who runs the food pantry at 803 Notre Dame Avenue (the Community Center), will try to be there to talk about their needs/how to get them the harvest. Hope to see some neighbors there!

This is what our sign will look like when it is finished. Thanks to Jeff Vitton of South Bend Heritage/City of South Bend for designing it. I just need to get some wood and posts and get started! It will go on the corner of the lot and we hope to plant lots of flowers around it. Even though Unity Gardens is about FOOD, this sign & the corner need some flowers!

Work Days & Work Done

Here are some photos from yesterday afternoon and this morning. We are going to try and have work days on Weds & Fri from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and then on Sunday from 4 to 7ish. This week we are expecting a compost delivery so need to get the rest of the beds cleared of grass clods. The bed with the peas, spinach, lettuce, chard, and onions got watered today and the bed to the left is pretty well cleared. That just leaves the big one and the long narrow ones. A big thank you to Sara P and Deandra from yesterday and then Lisa and her daughters today.
If you want to come work, the grass clods are the most important thing right now. Rake to the edges and turn over the big ones, so the roots are exposed and they make a kind of border around the bed, or just go through with your hands
and shake out the dirt.
Be careful, gloves are necessary, as there is a lot of glass in the soil. The grass clods can be put in the compost pile-look for the shoe tree, you can't miss it.
So we will be out there tomorrow around 4 and again on Wednesday after work. Come out if you can!

Yay Groundbreaking!

Groundbreaking today was fantastic. We were blessed with wonderful weather to start with and it just got better from there. Several neighbors stopped by along with other members of the community, 3 TV news crews and one reporter for the SB Tribune. The ground is tilled and one section is planted with peas, spinach, swiss chard, onions, lettuce, mustard greens, and collard greens. There are other sections that still need to be raked out-grass clods galore for the new compost pile. We will probably have a work day Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon-will post which one by tomorrow for sure. What a wonderful start!

Where are we?

We are at the corner of Turnock and South Bend Avenue, just south west of the five corners intersection (south of Notre Dame campus). The forecast is looking dry for Wednesday & I hope it stays that way!
